Background

Before construction of Ray Mayne Hose & Fittings' great new building and carpark could get underway in the Ashburton Business Park, their site needed to be fully prepped and prepared. Working on behalf of local construction company McIntosh Builders and alongside local architects and drainage consultants, our team effectively prepared the land for building construction, project managing the entire process and mitigating challenges along the way for a great result.

We also completed the carpark start to finish.

Planning and site clearing

As with any project, getting the planning right at the start is important, so before any work began, our team collaborated with McIntosh Builders, Chilton and Mayne Architects and TM Consultants to understand the full needs of the project.

We then got to work on excavating the site for a new carpark, building site and yard area, stripping off the area for a clean slate.

In preparation for the stages to come, we also set about ensuring all local and regional consents were sought and obtained, including getting new Vehicle Entrance, Water, Sewer and Stormwater Consent through the Ashburton District Council and adhering to exisiting Environment Canterbury consent. It was during this process that we identified that the original supplied levels were incorrect and so we quickly set about re surveying the site for correct levels and got the project back on track before any delays occurred.

Preparing for the foundation

After completing a full GPS site grade to determine the fill required for the site, we began backfilling and building up all areas of the site using imported material. We prepped concrete areas for building foundations and aprons and completed sand blinding to ensure a clean, dry pad for the concreting to come.

Once complete, we performed a final trim and finish to ensure all levels were accurate using our GPS Tractor and Blade.

As part of this project we also designed a Washdown Treatment Pad.

Carpark

We completed the full needs of the carpark. After preparing the site, we asphalted both the carpark and entrance ways and project managed the line markings , working alongside Spraymarks, a local Line Marking team.

Drainage

To prepare the whole site for drainage we:

  • Installed 2 Heavy Duty Crossings with culverts and wing walls
  • Installed a Vee Channel in the yard area
  • Installed Kerb and Channel and Nib Kerb
  • Dug and developed 3 soak pits

We also arranged all drainage supplies and managed drain-laying crews for complete project management over this crucial stage.

We have worked with Tarbotton Land & Civil for many years. We recently built our new company premises in the Ashburton Business Estate, and Tarbotton Land & Civil were awarded the contract for all of the siteworks including water reticulation, drainage, stormwater and hot mixing etc. They were not the cheapest, but I personally needed a contractor I could trust, as I was not on site on a day to day basis, as we operate a very busy irrigation business in Ashburton. I left the job to Stuart and his team, and I was very impressed with the top quality job that they completed – at a very fair and reasonable price.
