We believe it's important to get your dairy conversion process right from the start.

Why convert to dairy?
The dairy industry in New Zealand is currently thriving thanks to positive market drivers, including rising milk prices, the repayment of agri-debt, the outlook for dairying compared to other farming sectors, and recent changes in the national regulatory environment.
Whether it’s for a new or existing dairy farm, it’s essential to hold a consent for animal effluent discharges and water permits for taking and using water in the dairy shed. At Tarbotton Land & Civil, we help you succeed in the conversion or upgrade to your existing facilities, ensuring they meet industry sustainability standards.
Why us?
At Tarbotton, we’re a trusted family business with a reputation for getting the job done right the first time. For over 35 years, we’ve been committed to putting in the hard yards for our clients — and in that time we’ve successfully completed over 30 dairy conversions. That experience means we know what works and what doesn’t, helping farmers avoid costly mistakes and get their conversions running smoothly from day one.

How can we help?
Our dairy conversion services cover all your needs, big or small, for a sustainable and efficient transition. We provide a complete solution from effluent ponds and irrigation dams to feed pads, silage pads, sheds, barns, underpasses, laneways, land development and more, we provide the full package to set your farm up for long-term productivity.
Stock Underpass / Overpass
Move cows safely without stopping traffic. We design, consent and build stock underpasses and overpasses that keep milkings on schedule and remove risky road crossings. Our end-to-end service covers survey and design, council/Waka Kotahi approvals, traffic management, excavation, precast box installation, backfill and compaction, drainage/sumps, fencing and stock water realignment. Built for herd flow and low maintenance, our underpasses and stock overbridges improve animal welfare, reduce lameness from road chips, and save time every day. We work across Ashburton, Mid Canterbury and the wider Canterbury district, sequencing works around your milking to minimise disruption and reinstate roads to specification.
Effluent Ponds
We design and build effluent ponds that are compliant, durable and tailored to your farm, with options for HDPE-lined ponds (with gas drainage where below ground level) or engineered clay-lined ponds compacted to PN21 standards. Both systems can include leak detection and monitoring to meet council requirements, and we manage the full process from design and consents through to construction, with the option to arrange Pond Drop Tests where required, ensuring your pond is correctly sized with DairyNZ’s DESC tool and provides reliable, future-proof storage.
Irrigation Ponds & Dams
We build irrigation ponds and dams that provide secure water storage and maximise irrigation efficiency. Each project starts with a topographic survey, then we work with you on a 3D pond design to refine the shape and volume, balancing cut-to-fill so there’s no wastage and earthworks are as efficient as possible. Using HDPE liners or engineered clay, we construct ponds with GPS-controlled earthworks for accuracy, and manage the full process from consents and compliance through to spillways, outlets and dam safety requirements. The result is a compliant, cost-effective pond that’s built to spec and provides reliable water for pivots and irrigation systems.
Tree & Stump Removal
We provide safe, efficient tree and stump removal to clear land for pasture, irrigation, or farm development. Our specialised gear includes a Sennebogen tree-handling machine with a 15 m reach for removing difficult trees near power lines and buildings, along with a 36-tonne excavator fitted with tree shear and Satco attachments for larger tree and stump removal. From shelter belt removal to full site clearing, we have the equipment and experience to get the job done quickly and safely.
Dairy Sheds & Yards
We carry out the full earthworks and civil works for dairy sheds and yards, starting with topographic surveys and 3D CAD design, where we also work alongside the builders to get site levels and layouts right from the start. Our work includes building up the shed base, excavating footings, installing water, stormwater, and effluent pipework through our certified drainlayer, and trenching for power. Whether it’s a rotary or herringbone shed, we complete the site preparation ready for the builders, ensuring everything ties together smoothly for construction.
Bridges & Culverts
We supply and install bridges and culverts that keep stock, farm traffic and irrigation moving safely across drains, creeks and waterways. From small culverts to large precast bridges, we deliver durable, compliant crossings that stand up to Canterbury conditions.
Compost Barns, Stand-off Pads & Calf Sheds
We take care of the earthworks and civil construction asscoiated with compost barns (dairy barns), stand-off pads and calf sheds, starting with a topographic survey and 3D design to balance cut-to-fill and get site levels right. Our team build up the foundations, excavate service trenches for power ducts and stockwater, and install the stormwater / drainage system. By working alongside the builder from the outset, we ensure the site is constructed accuratley, efficiently, and fully prepped for construction.
Farm Tracks & Laneways
As part of dairy conversions, we design and construct dairy laneways and gravel tracks that provide efficient, all-weather access across your farm. Our team manages the full process, from de-tracking redundant laneways through to building new gravel or lime tracks shaped to the correct grade providing good drainage for reliable long-term performance. Our lime track rock is sourced locally, while gravel is supplied from our local quarry, remote stockpile sites, or processed onsite with our mobile crushing and quarrying plant. This allows us to deliver and construct new tracks quickly and cost-effectively across the district.
Silage Pads
We design and construct silage pads that provide a safe and compliant area for storing silage while preventing leachate from seeping into the ground. Silage pads can be built with a thick layer of lime track rock or concrete, with concrete being the preferred option as it is easier to scrape up and therefore reduces silage waste while also eliminating leachate issues. Our process includes stripping topsoil, building up foundations, and excavating footings in preparation for concrete and precast concrete walls, ensuring levels and drainage are correct so the pad is strong, well-drained, and ready for long-term use.
Feed Pads
Feed pads are purpose-built off-paddock feeding areas that support efficient supplement use, protect pasture from pugging, and reduce feed waste. We handle the full civil-works scope from topographic surveys and design to ensure correct fall and drainage, through to stripping topsoil, building gravel foundations, and preparing for a thick layer of lime track rock or concrete. These pads are engineered to minimise feed loss and meet effluent-management requirements by capturing runoff effectively.
Land Development
We provide comprehensive land development services to prepare farms for their next stage. Our capabilities include bulk earthworks, such as contouring terraces, de-tracking, removal of header races, and water dykes. We also carry out mulching, giant discing, harrowing, and root raking, as well as clearing gorse, broom, and other unwanted vegetation. With a modern fleet of GPS-enabled scrapers, bulldozers, excavators, graders, and other specialist earthmoving equipment, we can efficiently develop land ready for productive dairy farming.
